The Stag: THE RETURN OF THE KING

Primal, noble, fascinating – this is the impression of the stag, especially in autumn, when, with loud roars and violent clashes with rivals, he courts favour with the female. This is a rarely observed spectacle in nature, as the King of the Forest is otherwise shy and reticent.

The largest domestic mammal originally lived on the steppes and feels most comfortable in open country. He used to be over-hunted because of his antlers, much sought after as hunting trophies. Today, stags are only tolerated in relatively small areas. The ‘big brown bark-eater’ is disliked by forest owners and foresters because he chews young saplings and removes the bark from trees.

The infinite forests of the National Park region are one of the last big refuges for the stag in Germany. Here it can live as a king.
