Large, staring eyes, a head which can turn through 270 degrees and almost silent flight – these aspects inspire respect but also mistrust. These night birds have always been symbols of wisdom and misfortune.
One of the largest and most important domestic species of owl is the Ural owl. He has a mixture of light and dark grey plumage, with long tail feathers and nothing can beat him for mobility. In the Bavarian Forest, these birds prefers old forests with plenty of beech trees in sunny positions. They nest in holes in trees or in existing nests of birds of prey.
After the last one was shot in 1926, the Ural owl was extinct in Bavaria. After extensive efforts by the National Park to return birds to the wild, 6-7 breeding pairs have now settled. In order to ensure the return of the Ural owl for the long term, more suitable breeding places and secure habitats are needed.
