The Otter

Cheeky and agile could be a first impression of this animal. But the otter is also an elegant swimmer, perfectly suited to hunting in water.

Unfortunately, the otter is now one of the most threatened animals in Europe. Whether as a source of thick, silky furs, competitor to fishers or even as a Lenten food, the otter has always been sought after. Living in clear rivers with overgrown banks, he also has to cope with human interference. Otters nearly died out completely in Bavaria in the 1970s.

Otters are now returning to rivers and streams in the mountains on the Bavarian-Bohemian border, especially in the National Park, thanks to improving water quality and measures to protect this species.

Otters can be observed in the wild but need a lot of patience and luck for an unforgettable experience.
