The resort of Spiegelau, at 759 metres above sea level, lies right in the Bavarian Forest National Park, at the foot of the „Great Rachel“ (1,453 metres). Let your soul drift free or visit the ruggedly picturesque Steinklamm, a rocky gorge with moss covered stones and potholes made by the Großen Ohe. The 50 hectare Forest Playground, only a few minutes walk away from the centre of the village, is a great opportunity for children to play and have fun. With the motto „Finding nature through play“, this is fun for all the family. At 10 points on the nature trail, the world of the forest is brought to life in varied and unusual ways.
Thanks to the National Park philosophy, „Let Nature be Nature“, woodpeckers can find all the deadwood they need to nest in. These are the ideal conditions for the 7 species of woodpecker which live here and this is the reason why Spiegelau chose the woodpecker as its mascot.
