Frauenau is an ideal place for peace and relaxation as well as sports and activities. Frauenau, the „glass heart“ of the Glass Route (Glasstraße), is surrounded by the lovely low mountain scenery of the Bavarian Forest , with its Natural and National Parks. The Glassmakers’ Village is a nationally recognised resort, at an altitude of 580 to 1,452 metres, with a glassmaking tradition and an active art glass movement which is unique in Europe. The new glass museum, opened in 2005, has an international reputation for its fascinating presentation of the history of glass from its beginnings until the present day. The lovely rococo church, the reservoir, the high moors in the neighbouring National Park and the falconry at Oberfrauenau with its impressive demonstrations are all worth a visit.
Active holidays in natural surroundings can be enjoyed in the gentle Flanitz valley and at the foot of the Great Rachel. 130 km of paths for hiking and cycling in summer, 2 drag lifts and 30 km of cross country skiing trails in winter are just a few examples of the wide range of facilities available in and around Frauenau.
As part of the „Untamed Wilderness“ project, Frauenau has chosen the falcon as its mascot. The main link to this domestic bird of prey is the falconry based at Oberfrauenau. With the help of an EU subsidy, the Glassmakers’ Village is planning a falcon-themed walk as well as festivals and lectures on the subject.
