Endless Forest Wilderness across Borders

For decades, the ‚iron curtain‘ was a tangible political and ideological border between the Bavarian and Bohemian Forests, even though the landscape has always been one geographical and historical unit. Fortunately this now belongs to the past: today, people come together, celebrate and rediscover cultural common ground. Cross-border cycling and hiking maps carry information about both sides of the border.
The ‘untamed wilderness’ project brings together large and small National Park communities on both sides of the Bavarian-Bohemian border. This includes thirteen Bavarian and nine Bohemian communities. Both National Parks, Bavarian Forest and Sumava, are also partners. They are both protected areas and habitats for plants and animals which have become rare. With their visitor centres and many facilities they are frequently visited by guests and locals, thus showing that tourism and nature protection complement one another and do not have to be a contradiction.
